Free your mind...

The idea I have revolves around the idea of a tree. The lines in the wood, the rings in the tree, the roots, and the canopy. Each one of these elements I have a place for in the store. They will begin to overlap, mix, separate and fill the space. I find the grain and rings the most adequate for this space. Since our space is quite long and narrow, I compared that to the grain of the tree. Tree grain is long and string like, but occasionally there are bumps, spaces, and knots. There is something there in the terms of the store layout. Tree rings are also something I want to imitate. Not round, and not so literal, but I find the repetitiousness to be a real space saver. I envision this idea for the gallery. Tree bark is a mixture of the rings and grain to me. The texture is something I want to explore. Why does bark grow the way it does? What is the purpose of bark? The roots and canopy is the foundation of not only the tree, but of The Hatchery. The roots symbolize the historical aspects of the space. I hope to expand upon the real 'bones' of the space and find out what the space is really is. The canopy of a tree is usually the same size as the roots of a tree. When we look a tree from the ground, we spend most of our time looking up at the branches, the leaves, exploring what is in there and how tall it is. Therefore I want my space to not only be visually pleasing on the floor and walls, but I want the ceiling to be the most exciting. I want it to pull you through the space.

When a person comes through the door, I want them to be greeted with a large open space, with lots of repetitious lines, that will quickly filter down into several smaller spaces and walkways. The space will be that of an open maze, with various wall heights and ceiling heights. The walls and floors will be clean, with only a few colors. ( black, natural wood tones, and white) The space structurally will be energetic. On a small level the space will be very simple and very plain. The artists have hung their pieces and decorated it based on the season and activities currently going on. The space now has character. It is brimming with creative installations, some permanent and some temporary. It has pockets of spaces where visitors are surprised. It makes them want to explore the space even more. The space feels used, warm and homey, but commercial and professional all at the same time.

The Concept....

I have finally decided on a concept. I know, I know hard to believe but I have chosen a tree. Not so much for its textures , but for its structure, internal and external shapes and its lines.

Hatchery Ideas and Inspiration...

Im not sure where I am going at the moment... As usual I cant place all my ideas under one concept idea, much less come up with one concept. I usually work backwards, and my concept emerges half way through the process. This time I really want to create a concept before I get too far into the project.

For now here are several images. They are all clean, earthy and open. Glass, wood and white space is also throughout.

Hatchery Bubbles....

I devoted the most space to the Performance space and the gallery space. The coffee, retail and collaboration space with the second largest amount. I wanted the 'departments' to have equal amounts of space. All close together. I included storage, bathrooms in the diagram as well. The arrows symbolize areas that will be connected openly. Possibly without doors. The dotted lines mean hallways or privacy.
